TUESDAY DAILY ANNOUNCEMENT
PELHAM MEMORIAL HIGH SCHOOL
TUESDAY ~ DECEMBER 12, 2017 ~ DAY 3
Attention students, faculty and staff: The students travelling to Italy in February will be selling raffle tickets for chances to win one of two baskets filled with Italian speciality items. The fundraiser will begin this Thursday, December 14th. The students participating in the Italy trip will be selling tickets through Friday, January 5th. Thank you for your support and happy holidays!
Still looking for a nice holiday gift for a loved one/family member? You still have time to purchase a beautiful holilday wreath from the Class of 2020! The Wreath Sale will continue until Friday 12/15! Wreaths are $20! Please download the attached form and/or see a Sophomore or Mr. Sirico/Mrs. Waters if you'd like to purchase one! Thank you for your support!
On Sunday December 17, PMHS will be hosting an in-store book fair at Barnes & Noble Eastchester. There will be performances and book readings for children--we're even working on having an author/book signing hour--to encourage our community to get out there and create a community of readers. It'll be a great time to get some last minute holiday gifts too. A portion of the sales will be donated to the high school PTA to promote future reading-themed events, like last year's pop-up summer reading book shop!
Your Monday root word of the week is: “ambul” which means: walk, move. This Latin root appears in many English words such as: amble - to walk in a slow, relaxed way; ambulant - walking or moving around; ambulance - a vehicle that moves a patient.
QUOTE OF THE WEEK: That was Styx and “Come Sail Away.” This will serve as inspiration for your Tuesday quote of the week from author Andre Gide. He once wrote: “People cannot discover new lands until they have the courage to lose sight of the shore.” Gide is encouraging people to take calculated risks and broaden their horizons. This is great advice for all of us. When you go outside of your comfort zone and take on a new challenge, you open yourself up to the possibility of growth. I challenge you to continue to, in Gide’s own words, “discover new lands.” Maybe that means that you will try a new elective, or maybe you’ll join a new sport or club, or maybe you’ll start to seek out extra help in your class, or maybe you’ll just branch out and become friends with new people. In any case, have the courage to lose sight of the shore and you just may find something new that changes your life.
BRAINTEASER: A snail is at the bottom of a well. The well is thirty meters deep. The snail climbs up the wall and advances three meters in one day. During the night, the snail slides back two meters back down the wall. How many days does it take for the snail to get out of the well?

Mindful Monday Moment That was The Beatles and “All you need is love.” Your Monday Mindful Moment focuses on the central theme of this beautiful song: the idea that love is all we need. We would love for you all to be mindful of the essential role you play in impacting so many other lives in this school. Since the impact can just as easily be negative as it can be positive, let’s all be mindful of having a positive impact on people around us. Whether they are your friends, your acquaintances, or people you have never spoken to, try being mindful of the power of your kindness during this next week of school. I would love to hear about these random or conscious acts of kindness. Although reporting what you did is certainly secondary to actually committing the act of kindness, if you are inclined to email me or tell me in the hallway about how you contributed to the atmosphere of kindness in our school, I would love that. All we need is love Pelicans.
